i know some one had a simalar question, to mine but if the cockatiel is introduced as a baby to adult parakeets would they get along? i am hand feeding a cockateil baby and it will be a matter of weeks before it is weened. i have layed it in the bottom of the parakeets cage and they just look at it but dont do any thing to it.
My mom believes that it is dangerous for a caged bird like a Cockatiel or Parakeet to be in a room where there are lit scented candles or incense because of the respiratory effects it might have on the bird and I say that having a bird in a well-ventilated room (one with an open floor plan or that has windows), that's ok and perfectly safe.
Who's right?
i have two pet cockatiels and they enjoy preening my eyes, however my eyes have become really sore lately and my right eye hurts to keep open. i have a small amount of yellow stuff in the corner of my eyes each morning and my eyes have a few red lines too. could this be caused by the birds or could it be something else do you know. i also spend a massive amount of time on my laptop, but i do use it in a well lit room and at a distance. thx .
my cockatiels have had 4 eggs, and one of them hatched the bird wil be 3 weeks old in 2 days, and they have already mated again and are laying the first eggs today... i do not know what i shoul do... would the older bird attack the younger ones? When should i remove it from the nest( if i should at all)?
My cockatiel keeps laying her crest flat and screaming. she is about a year old and I have only had her 4-5 days. If I cover the cage for a few minutes she stops I also leave part of it coverd so she can "hide" I know she is still getting used to her enviroment but why is she getting so mad?
She also does this if she can see me or even if she cant.
we have two older birds, male and female, which had baby birds a month ago, but the female has just laid another egg.
do i remove the two younger birds so that they don't harm the egg?
or should i keep them in the cage so the mother can continue feeding them?
i don't know how to feed OR what to feed a one month old cockatiel because the mother usually does it.
i have a 15 year old cockatiel who is not hand tame, and i want to try to tame him but i'm afraid that he's too old to become comfortable around people. he's extremely clumsy and fearful of just about everything, including most toys and food treats... even a mirror freaks him out. he does come out of his cage when he wants to and likes to walk on the table around his cage, and he can whistle a little tune i taught him, but it's taken years for him to get to this point. i've tamed young budgies and lovebirds before, but i've never tried it with an older bird. any effort i make to tame him seems to seriously stress him out... has anyone been able to accomplish this? any advice?
a little background info: about 6 years ago i found him in my backyard, and he had been injured by a cat (which i'm sure was pretty traumatic). i took him in and he's now very healthy and enjoys my family's company, but i have no idea how his previous owner(s) treated him.

My grandmothers lutino hen has a squint feather on her wing, this turns out to be a feather that appears to have grown in backwards since the spines in the rest of the feathers point inwards whilst this points outwards
What should be done about this?
i have two cockatiels, one female and one male ( or so i suspect him being a male since hes pied but falls under all the aspects a male cockatiel would do and be like) ever since the female started laying the eggs, i have put in a nest box. at first both were afraid but now not so much. she has layed 6 eggs in total right now but all on the bottom of the cage but not in the nest box. i have put the eggs in the box each time i would find one on the cage floor but they still dont go in and incubate the eggs. what is the problem? can anyone tell me why she ownt lay the eggs in the nest box? how would i be able to incourage the eggs being layed in the box?
I have been a bird lover since age 8. In my life i have had two budgies and now that my second one has died, i have found myself bird-less. So now i am looking to get another bird but decided to step up from Budgies and try a new breed. At first i thought Cockatiels since i heard a lot of good things about them. Then i started looking at Lovebirds since they are adorable and have a nice song. The only thing is that alot of people say its better to have a pair of them instead of just one, and personally i just want one bird to bond with. Then today i learned about Parrotlets and am thinking that they might be a nice fit to my personality. Mainly i am looking for a bird who will be happy to sit on my shoulder as i type on the computer or sit and watch tv. Cost is also a matter though and i know how much Lovebird and Cockatiels cost, but i am unsure about parrotlets. Also, are parrotlets easy to find or are they rare and have to be bought by a breeder? Thanks in advance!
im going to get one but im not sure wich
is this because shes pregnant? ive seen her matting with our male. if so what should i do to prepare?
I just bought her a new swing she will not get on how do I get her used to her swing?????
I am 16, and my life revolves around my pets. We have 3 dogs, 1 cockatiel, 1 cat, a fish tank, and 16 hermit crabs. The fish tank and hermit crabs are in my room. Everything else is a family pet.
Well, yesterday I went to the petstore and there was this little rat that basically begged me to take it home. It held onto my finger and licked it and I just fell in love with it. Since I've had hamsters in the past i already have all the supplies. All I need is the rat.
My mom won't let me because we have "to many" animals. I don't see how she can decide when we have to many. The rat would be in my room as with my hermit crabs and fish. I had the crabs for like 3 days before she even noticed i had them and she still doesn't see them.
If the rat would be in my room, costing my money, not smelling, or effecting her life at all, shouldn't i be able to get it?
*She isn't afraid of rats, she even agreed they make great pets.
Should I be able to get the rat?
How can you tell when its to many. I haven't had a problem taking care of 4 hamsters at once plus my fish tank in my bedroom, why couldn't i handle a rat.
the thing is, im really unsocial, don't have many friends at all. I spend all my time at home while my parents are at work alone and all i have is my pets. Thats why I like to have alot of them around. And for some reason, I love cleaning fishtanks and cages. Its actually kind of fun for me.
Trust me, my animals are all very clean, its not unsanitary at all.
Mr. Suggestion. If I get one rat, how is it going to multiply? You have to have 2 rats in order for that to happen. And the one I want is a male.
She knows it will be in my room. I even set a cage up for it and everything and she went the whole day without even seeing the cage. I told her it was there at the end of the day to prove that it won't be effecting her at all.
We won't have to worry about the rat going to college with me. They only live about 2 years. She didn't have a problem with me getting 16 hermit crabs. Those things can live 15 years and will have to go somewhere when I go to college.
I just don't get it.

I want to train my cockatiel with treats but dont know what they like.
I have a new cockatiel for 3 days(maybe a year old) and he doent make alot of noise. I dont mind but I thought he would chirp a little more. He chirps really loud once and a while like he is flock calling but thats it. Is that normal?
I am considering buying a pet cockatiel in a month or two, and I know that they have very sensitive lungs. I understand to never use aerosol air freshener, and scented candles are a risk. However, can anyone tell me if there are any safe air fresheners to use (I will be keeping it in my bedroom)? Would reed diffusers be fine, or are they still risky?
Thanks!
Okay, I have a 1 1/2 year old Cockatiel, all of the sudden he is doing the strangest things! He has always been so sweet, gives me kisses, sits on my shoulder, walks around the house and comes to you when you call him, loves my long haired Chihuahua and now, he is like He*#! He whistles all time and says his name but now, when I am trying to watch a movie or having a conversation with someone, he screetches and whistles louder and louder, when I stop talking or push mute on the t.v., he stops, and he laughs at me..lol it is funny but it is getting irritating! Also just this last week, he started doing something strange with one of his hanging treats in the cage, he will sit on his perch with one foot grasping the toy (the other on the perch), he pulls it to him, he puffs his chest feathers out and rocks back and forth as if he is trying to mate with this treat...it is funny also, but I am not sure what he is doing, is this normal? is this puberty or what? He is my 1st bird.
I know this is going to sound nuts, but when I got him from a breeder, even he was unsure as to the birds sex, the bird was only a couple of months old when I got him/her.
I do give him ALOT of attention, probally more than I should, he is out with me all of the time, until recently when he started getting up on the ceiling fan and runs from me when it is time to go back in the cage. I think his wings need clipped. I would love to get another bird! Will he accept it fine in his cage or do I need to keep them seperate for awhile? and how do I know for sure that he is male? go to the vet? duh! Thanks for your answers!
Dennis, can you send me the article? please

the other cockatiel used to talk and flies on me.but this cockatiel is afraid.can after a week become like the other one
When cockatiel lays eggs. why does the mother do droppings the size of a pelican and sprays everywhere does that stop or is that a long term thing once they start breeding?
It was 2 weeks since I have bought 2 new Cockatiel, one male and another female, of 3/4 months. I love them so much but the don't love me instead they fear me. Several times they had chewed my fingers enjoyingly, I enjoy it too but when I got to touch them they simply flyies away. Please give suggestion???
Are Parakeets similar to cockatiels because I studies a lot about cockatiels because I was thinking of getting one. (Not anymore though being that my friend who knows that I love birds got me a Parakeet.) The last few hours I've been talking normal to the bird and playing a game that has some music so it is not completly silent in my room.
i bought 2 cockatiels on sat and was told that they both were male but one of the birds(gray bird) keeps mounting the other. and the one on who gets mounted (white bird) is getting it's blood feathers broken off. the lady i bought them from has over 100 birds so i thought she knew enough to sell me two males not a male and a female....so how do i tell and if it is a female how old does she need to be to lay eggs? also the white bird lets the gray bird mount it so is that normal? they have been in the same cage and get along and scream for each other when i take one out of the cage. thank you for any help.
yes she has over 100 birds of many different kinds. i am sure i saw 15 different kinds there.
i am coming home from california and im looking for a cockatiel.where is the best place to buy one
I got a new cockatiel and he wont eat! So i gave him a millit spray hoping he would eat that, well he did. But why wont he eat the seed? The place I got him fed him seed.
I dont want him to starve but he needs to eat a healthy diet too!
previously a owner of a cockatiel experienced)anyways I found a budgie bird stray outside. It was sohungry and its face looked lost so i gave it a home. After one week i felt bad for"sunny" because he seemed lonely. I purchased a female at the store. Now i have two healthy budgies female about one year old and male about 2-3 years old, living in a medium sized cage. They are getting along well. They are not sick, so i was able to put them in the same cage, after watching them for many hours together i noticed they would be fine together in that cage. I bought a nest for them because the people at the pet store told me that they would definitly have eggs. I would like to know from your own experience how long do you think it will take for them to have eggs. I am not trying to make money off of breeding them. I just want them to do as they want. I just need some information about their relationships, eggs, and everything else there is to know. Thank you so much for helpin me thanks
I have a cockatiel. I have been told it is a pearl pide (or is it pied?) cockatiel. I have heard of pearl and pide/pied but not pearl pide/pied.
please explain the differences between both and explain the mix. is it rare, or was I just told wrong from the beginning?

How do you make the food?
what can you feed them ?
tell me please!
i just want to know just in case
what do you put in the baby bird food?
My neighbor has a Cockatiel who she says love bathing. She gets the squirt bottle and squirts him and he opens his wings as if to let her do it under there. And glides his wings so she can keep doing it. She does it once in a while but he is all distorted like he is drunk or something staggers and rolls around his perch......but then after about 5-10 minutes he is ok and shakes it off. He is 3 years old and she has done this for some time now.
i have found some but none have a baby male cockatiels. please help me! websites, phone numbers, anything!
Our Cockatiel Moss, is 3-4 years old. He is a normal gray, male. My family bought him last December, along with his brother, Brady. I started training him to get on my finger today, and it went okay, but not very well. He was really scared, even though I talked to him soothingly and let him come out of the cage all by himself. He hadn't flown since December until now, since the cage is really small and he can't fly. we trained him for about an hour.
Well, today when I attempted to put him back into the cage, he wouldn't let me, since he kept biting and flying away. so, I took a small hand towel, put on a gloves, and grabed him fast, but not roughly. He tried to get away, but I put him into the big cage door, and let him out. I made sure not to squeeze him too hard i think too. But as soon as he was free, he hopped down, and then he stood there and started sneezing. =( I was really worried and tried to see what the matter was. then he stood still and i picked him up. what's going on?!
i ran out of room to finish.
anyways, he started sneezing!=( I picked him up, and he let me! He didn't bite or anything. he just stood there. i placed him gently on the perch, and he stood there with his comb(feathers on his head) sticking straight up(sign of fear/alert) and he was holding out his wings, like it was really hot. His eyes were wide, and his feathers were flat against his body. What in the world is happening?! I am really worried! Someone told me that it may be because he hasn't flown in a long time, and he's not used to it. He hasn't flown since December, or even longer, since i don't know if the people who used to own him let him out to fly. and the cage he's in now is the same cage he used to live in before we bought him, since the cage came with the two 'tiels when we bought them. please, someone tell me what is wrong with him, or if it's normal for 'tiels to do that after not flying for a long time! he's acring normal now, but still holding out his wings. ='(
I'm just a kid, and so i can't bring him to the vet!
my mom is working, and he's acting fine now, singing and chirping to his bro Brady, but still holding his wings out. maybe he's stressed?
okay, Moss is acting pretty much normal now. He's still a little shaken up it looks like, since his comb is sticking up, but over all, he's acting better.
why was he acting like he was paralyzed? He just sat there and let me pick him up, and he just stared. this doesn't sound like a normal thing for a 'tiel to do if he enjoyed his exercise, JsBCuz. =/
ok thanks everyone! I'm feeling a little better, just a little shaken up, because I felt that if he died, it would be my fault, and that guilt would haunt me forever! One time we found a Robbin's egg that had fallen out of a nest, since some squirrels got into it, and it wasn't broken. so we brought it inside and placed it under a light. it was fertile, since you could see stuff inside. but one day when i was holding it up to the light, it slipped out of my hand, and fell and cracked! ='( I felt soooo guilty! It made me not want to touch an egg ever again(although I did later on, since we got chickens) i told myself i was so dumb for picking up the egg. that feeling of guilt was similar to when Moss started acting strange. I'm relieved that he is acting okay now. =)
i have been hand feeding my cockatiel since i got it, is that the best way to tame your bird?? It sometimes hisses at me but will that stop in time.
this is my first time that i breeed my cockatiels right now im feeding them seeds, some little balls of seeds, wheat bread, millet spray, and i forgot what its called but it has calcium in it, and romain lettuce is their that i should i give them?
I was in my horses coral yesterday and noticed that a black baby sparrow had fallen out of its nest... normally i would have left it there but.. I have a horse that hates any little thing that moves in her pasture and she would have surely killed it her or our cat one if had left it so I took it and placed it in the cage with my female cockatiel in hopes that she will be motherly to it but I have not a clue what to feed it. I tried feeding it worms but it wont touch them.. its seems to be standing on its own some and its just getting its primary feathers. Its parents were solid black on the head, back and wings with a reddish breast and grey belly, with yellow beaks. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
There is no safe place.. If i put it in the fence near the nest my horse will trample it... and if i put it outside the fence, away from the nest.. my cat will get it.
Ok.. I just found out its a baby Swallow.
Ok I tried to take it back but when i did i noticed that most of the babies that were left in the nest had done fallen out and died. My horse is very tempermental and does not like small things in its fence.
Recently a stray cockatiel came to my house and after searching for the owner with no success, we decided to keep it.
We don't know if it's male or female, though. How can i tell?
It's completely yellow, with orange cheeks. My old female cockatiel was gray with no yellow, and my old male was mostly yellow with a small bit of gray. I don't know how i should tell the difference between males and females.
I just got a female cockatiel and when I try to get her out of the cage, she hisses and bites like crazy. I am getting a male tomorrow who is already finger trained. How can I train her so that both can be handled. She is 1 year old and was a breader before and never handled. Please help. These are the first birds I have ever had.
This is my first time owning cockatiels.I have two of them. I want to know how i can tame them so the wont be afraid of me. Whenever i try to get near them they hiss or back away in a corner. I want them to trust me. how can i make them stop biting?
would clipping their wings make them any less aggressive?
Hello!
My family has two normal gray, male Cockatiels. Their names are Brady and Moss. They are both around 3-4 years old and they were raised in another family for about 3 years. we bought them with a cage and perches last year. When we got them, they were fairly quiet. But then Brady started whistling and screeching. I'm guessing that the past owners must have taught them that. anyway, they can sing and whistle, but they can't say human words. How do I teach them to talk? I talk to them every morning and mostly every time i walk by their cage. usually one of them will respond to my voice by whistling back or making some type of little chirp noise. They were obviously not handled that much, since they both bite REALLY hard. Even when I walk up to the cage, Moss will start hissing at me. I have tried handling them with gloves but they are afraid of the glove and I'm afraid that they will get hurt when they flap around like that. i want to train them to sit on my finger/talk but how?
I have read that when training birds to talk, you need to get their trust and you have to handle them. so i have to get them to get on my finger and not bite/fly away. i also read that you shouldn't pull back from the bird when it tries to bite, since that will make the bird know you are afraid. but if I don't pull away, he will bite me! And trust me, it hurts! Brady bit me once and it made me bleed! and, once again, I cant use gloves
Thanks everyone! Again, we have had Brady and Moss for about 1/2 year-1 year by now. I do most of the things you guys tell me to do, but they are still REALLY vicious. Every time I reach in to change their food/water dish, Brady will threaten me by opening his mouth and peeping at me with his comb(little feathers on his head) down, which is a sign of aggression. And Moss will do the same, but he will hiss at me and screech. One time of tried talking to him while putting my finger up to him, and he hissed ay me, but this time his comb stuck straight up(sign of fear) and he flattened his feathers and ran to the other side of the perch! I don't want to scare him so he will never come to my finger, but how do i gain his trust????I talk to them ALL THE TIME! but they still are afraid of me.
are these good signs that there's a chance that they will get better and i can gain their trust?
***Brady sometimes sits quietly in the bottom of the cage, all fuzzy and he looks like he's getting ready to take a nap. sometimes when he's like this, all calmed down, i will sit by the cage and talk to him, and he will just sit there and tilt his head as I talk to him slowly, saying things like "such a pretty boy." or "aww what a cutie you are, Brady!" and he won't be afraid or angry, because his comb is rested slightly upward, which is a sign of relaxation/contentment.
***Brady sometimes/usually whistles back to me when I whistle from up stairs or if i'm standing right next to the cage.
***Moss and Brady eat from my hand from the outside of the cage.
***I have brought Brady out of his cage and into the bathroom(which had the mirror covered and the toilet shut and towels laying on the sink for protection, and Brady sat on my finger, but he sometimes would bite.
are these good signs??
Brady and Moss eat from my hands too, usually they do it when I stick my finger into the side of the cage with a seed and they will eat it.
One time I even got to scratch Brady's head, and there's a pair of gloves that Brady isn't that afraid of. He will sit on them.
But the only way I can get Brady to come out of his cage is if I grab him and wrap him in a towel, making sure he can breath and I don't squeeze him too hard. then I let go of him slowly when we go into another room where he can't hear Moss very good.
would this be a good idea?
Should we clip Brady/Moss's wings, after we figure out how so we don't hurt them? This way, they can't fly away while we TRY and train them. I think that this would work pretty good, so instead of having to grab Brady/Moss out of the cage, we could just try and let him come out himself, that way it's safer because we know he can't fly away, and we couldn't do this before, since Brady would fly away as soon as he got out of the cage. this may help a lot, but how do we clip their wings?
are they very loud?
if so, when/why?
how much time should i spend with it everyday?
please give me any other important information
I am looking for a companion for my one year old male cockatiel. He is hand fed, does anyone know where I can get a baby female cockatiel that is a few months old or 1 or 2 years old. I have checked in pet stores and even when I did find some there they didn't even know which were males or females. If any one has one that they are looking to sell then that would be good too, just make sure it's healthy. that means that it carries no diseases and it has no fleas or mites.
If you have a cockatiel for me then it has to be somewhere in clifton new jersey because I am only 14 and my mom doesn't want to go far to get one.
i got a new girl cockatiel like 2 days ago, and we already had 2 males. and they went in her cage for a while, and the next day she laid an egg. is it fetilized? how can i tell? and it cracked too..and she was pecking at it. is that normal?
