Question: How to train a cockatiel?
( Back )
Answer #1:
first off hun they make that noise xxx to train them you need to start early with them when you first get them. If he doesnt bite, hold a piece of apple in your hand and see if he will take to it. if he bites clench your fist and lit him nip keep your hand there it shows that you are no harm to him. He will stop eventually hun you have to have patience and do it everyday talk and whistle to him and feel safe around him. They can eat banana, apple, anything but avocado, or citrus. no meat or anyhting they love grass. he will be around for a very long time so try new things and spend as much time as you can with him!! xxxxxx good luck hun xxxxxxx
Answer #2:
first off never ever flinch when he bites it will show dominance over you...i would recommend clicker/target training...this is where u get a chopstick his favorite treat and a clicker...so this is what u do at first u leave him in his cage and click the give him a treat (if u arent comfortable with this wear gloves) and keep doing this about 10-15 then leave him alone for a while the do it again then leave him alone awile....then come back this time with a chopstick and put it close to his face when he nips at it click then give him a treat and gradually move it farther from him and soon he will do anything to get the treat and gently lure him out of the cage and then back in and out and in for awile this builds trust and will stop the biting and u can lure him onto ur finger the same way....i really hope i helped nothin worse than a grumpy bird...hehe
Answer #3:
Step 1
Train your cockatiel to get onto your finger first if he doesn't already do this. Place your index finger crosswise in front of the bird, lightly touching his chest and say the word "up." At the same time gently push your extended finger back and up into his chest. This will cause him to loose his balance and step onto your finger.
Step 2
Repeat the steps above to get your bird onto your finger until she has that lesson mastered. After doing this several times, she will learn to step onto your finger whenever you say the word "up."
Step 3
Extend your arm straight out away from your body while your cockatiel is standing on your finger. Many cockatiels will take that as an invitation to run up your arm and when they get to your head they will settle on your shoulder on their own.
Step 4
Place the cockatiel on your shoulder if she doesn't run up your arm on her own. If you want her to come to your shoulder on command, then give a verbal command such as "shoulder" every time you place her on your shoulder.
Step 5
Continue placing your cockatiel onto your shoulder every time you are ready to spend time with him. Soon he will realize that a shoulder is a fun place to ride and he will find his favorite perch on his own.
Good Luck!
